The Chapel - sleeps 2

Our 16th century private chapel has been sensitively and lovingly brought into the 21st century. It has not changed from the outside and looks every bit as it did back when the Lord and Lady of the Manor were privately saying their prayers.

We have styled this building as an amorous hide-away – which felt only natural as this building feels like it has romance in its very stones! It is small, cosy and intimate. The design has been heavily influenced by camper van style living. The two-ring hob, 50′s diner-style seating and welsh blanket headboard all help give that 'holiday-escape' feel.

The double shower in the wet-room downstairs is glorious. The bed is comfortable and the quiet of the Devon countryside is sublime. The ladder-like stairs take a bit of getting used to, but once you've mastered them, they are great fun!

Treehouses

Ever wanted to wake up in a tree, just half a mile from the ocean?

Here at Pickwell Manor, our wonderful main house is very often the star of the show with its beautiful apartments and high, soaring ceilings.

But we love the acres of grounds too, including the gorgeous, sprawling woods that sit either side of the main house. Whether it’s the blanket of April bluebells or the falling leaves in Autumn, the woods here are always changing, always magical, always alive.

Best of all is the view you get when you’re standing amongst the trees, looking west to the Atlantic Ocean and the breathtaking views of the coastline just half a mile away. If you’re really lucky you can sometimes hear the sound of the ocean whooshing through the trees as it comes up from the beach below.

The treehouses

We’ve always wanted to make it as easy as possible for everyone who stays with us to enjoy the woods and feel connected to the landscape as much as possible. It’s why we created the family nature trail, a firepit and tyre swings for children.

Then one day we thought, wouldn’t it be brilliant if you could live outside too? If you could come and play in the woods for a few days in your very own stylish, boutique treehouse, hidden away from the world?

That’s why we have introduced three bespoke, handmade treehouses into the woods here at Pickwell Manor, The Hideaway and The Loft, designed for couples who want the ultimate romantic treetop retreat and The Den, as a family retreat.

The construction

Designed and built in the UK by the award-winning Simon Parfett and his Somerset company Bower House, The Loft tree house is in the West Woods and The Hideaway tree house is found in the East Woods, either side of the manor house. The Den was built by Round house designs of Bristol and fitted out by local craftsmen.

The treehouses are built with a combination of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology, for a mix of down-to-earth simplicity with enough extravagances to make you feel pampered.

In keeping with our ethos here, they’re completely sustainable too. All their heat and light comes from our own solar panels and the water is from our own natural spring.

Your escape starts here

Your getaway starts the moment you arrive at Pickwell. You’ll get your own parking spot with a wooden hut that contains a wheelbarrow to transport your luggage (if you need it) and a lantern to help light your way at night in the woods.

Follow the trail into the woods and discover your treehouse waiting for you, its lights twinkling through the trees. There is a winding wooden staircase up to an entrance deck and your front door. Inside you’ll find everything you need for a couple of days of recharging your body and mind.

A heavenly haven for you and your partner/friend awaits inside, small enough to be intimate but large enough to feel luxurious. The open plan interiors are handcrafted from larch and oak, all using sustainable trees indigenous to this country.

There’s a King Size bed from which you can see the surrounding woodland from your pillow. We want you to stretch out and feel at home, so there’s a full-length wardrobe plus a proper kitchen and a living area with your very own woodburner, where you can also enjoy dinner for two. There’s also an en suite shower room and loo. The Den has two full size bunk beds as well.

All treehouses open out onto large, seated balconies, and each one has its own hot tub to soak away your cares. You can sit out under the North Devon sky and enjoy simple pleasures like the sounds of the ocean waves down on the beach below, and the sight of the dark night sky full of stars, far away from city lights.

The Hideaway

Hide away from it all in a luxury treehouse that’s dog-friendly and has its own hot tub.

The Hideaway is nestled in our East woods with tranquil views over fields and sea to Hartland Point.

A heavenly haven for you and your partner/friend awaits inside, small enough to be intimate but large enough to feel luxurious. The open plan interiors are handcrafted from larch and pine, all using sustainable trees indigenous to this country. Whatever the weather, your very own luxury hot tub will soak your troubles away, as you kick back and enjoy a glass of complimentary fizz.

There’s a luxury king size bed from which you can see the rolling hills from your pillow. We want you to stretch out and feel at home, so there’s a full-length wardrobe with mirror, plus a proper kitchen and a living area with your very own wood burner, where you can enjoy a cosy dinner for two. There’s also a spacious en suite shower room and loo.

This treehouse was designed with the surrounding wood in mind. Colours reflect the hues of the bark, so visible from every window. There is even a nod to the Pickwell bees who have their home in one of the gardens nearby (don’t worry, they are not too nearby!) and produce the most clear and delicious honey nurtured from all the wildlife they discover in the environs.

The Hideaway is just that. A place to hide; to hunker-down; to sleep well in the delicious big bed - find yourself again and connect with nature. Our hope is that our interior will blend with the wood around you and reflect the outside, within.

All treehouses open out onto a large seated balcony. You can sit out under the North Devon sky and enjoy simple pleasures, like the sounds of the ocean waves down on the beach below, and the sight of the dark night sky full of stars, far away from city lights.

The Loft

Try out your very own slice of loft living, with this luxury treehouse complete with hot tub

The Loft hangs high above the mighty pine trees of the West Wood, overlooking the ocean below. It brings the outside in, inspired by the soft, flowing shape of the tree house itself. So it’s full of modern, contemporary shapes that combine with the earthy, natural world that surrounds it.

Outside, funky contemporary chairs and a large hammock await on the decking entrance, perfect for stargazing at night while wrapped up in a warm, soft blanket, or whiling away a lazy afternoon in the treetops. Or hop into your very own hot tub out on the terrace and warm up while enjoying a glass of something cold.

Inside you’ll love the warm, handcrafted oak and walnut interiors. It’s small enough to be cosy but large enough to feel luxurious, with plenty of small plants to make the place feel as alive inside as the woods are outside.

There are lots of little thoughtful touches inside that we hope you’ll love, from the teapot kettle to make your tea - to the excellent bluetooth radio speaker to make your tunes.

There’s a luxurious King Size bed from which you can see down to the ocean from your pillow, and plenty of robes, towels and hot water bottles to help you cosy up on chilly winter nights.

We want you to stretch out and feel at home, so there’s a full-length wardrobe plus a proper kitchen, stocked with beautiful Nkuku bowls, cups and plates.

There’s a cosy living area with your very own woodburner, and you can also enjoy dinner for two at the beautiful copper-topped breakfast table.

Pop a log into the burner, settle back onto the sofa and luxuriate in the warmth of a crackling wood fire. There’s also an en-suite loo and shower room. Enjoy a wash from the beautiful hollowed-out stone basin and a drench shower.

Heading outside, the Loft opens out onto a large seated balcony with views down to the sea. There are benches built under the eaves of the treehouse so you can gaze at the Atlantic Ocean splashing the rocks of Baggy Point below. Here you can sit out under the North Devon sky and enjoy simple pleasures like the whoosh of the ocean waves down on the beach below, and the sight of the dark night sky full of stars, far away from city lights.

The Den - sleeps 4

Welcome to your very own den, made for all the family to enjoy.

The Den soars high up and hidden away in the woods to the west of the manor house. It’s the perfect spot in which to hunker down and experience nature in all its raw glory, while treating yourself to a few days of well-earned luxury.

Your first sight of our newest, boldest treehouse won’t disappoint, as you ascend to this 4-bed treetop beauty via its imposing wooden staircase, which winds around the fairy-lit trees and brings you to your lofty new home.

We’ve designed a large, expansive balcony that wraps around the cedar treehouse and means you can live outside in the tree canopy as much as you like. The beautifully-sturdy chestnut handrails will give parents peace of mind, and we’ve put in gates at either end of the balcony so that you can create a large indoor-outdoor space for even the most relentlessly curious of little people.

Inside, we’ve taken our inspiration from the clean lines of Scandinavian design, with the pale cedar wood interiors contrasting the jet black frames of the windows. You’ll sleep like logs in our luxury king-sized bed, framed by its majestic antique bedhead. Simply stow your cases underneath the bed and take a tour of the rest of your new home.

We’ve hand-made smart storage solutions everywhere, from the wardrobe’s custom-built shelves and double hanging rails, to the pull-out drawers that form the steps in the bunk room, or the recessed cupboards that store everything you’ll need in the handbuilt kitchen.

Curl up on one of the adult-size beds in the bunk room and dream about living in the woods forever. We’ve put USB charging points in here too, as well as blinds that should keep even the earliest riser fast asleep until a more respectable hour.

Head back into The Den’s main room and throw a log on the fire. Your wood-burner (and additional underfloor heating) will keep you toasty through even the wildest nights.

When the sun is shining you can open the sliding full-length glass doors onto the balcony and let the outside in. When it’s not, enjoy the warm glow from the beautiful cloud lighting piece that lights up the whole treehouse.

Head out and take it easy in one of the cushioned reclining seats on the terrace. There’s a gas-fired BBQ should you wish to treat your tastebuds, and we’d love it if you grabbed a handful of the herbs that dot the terrace - they’re there for you to enjoy.

You can sit at the outside breakfast bar with the kitchen bifold window wide open and look straight into the treehouse, as the wind whispers through the treetops and the ocean crashes onto the beach less than a mile away.

The Den has one final treat in store for you. Head down a set of steps and you’re in the treehouse’s very own hideaway spa - a 4-person hot tub that offers total privacy. Pop a bottle or two in the drinks fridge and enjoy a glass of something cold while you sit out under the stars.

We think The Den has everything you’ll need for an unforgettable few days of high-flying amongst the trees. We hope you love it as much as we do.
